What is the Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS)?

The Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS) is designed to assess and treat individuals with recent, minor eye problems. Our accredited optometrists provide this service for free on the NHS.

Which Conditions Can Be Treated by the Service?

  • Red eyes or eyelids

  • Dry, gritty, or discomforting eyes

  • Eye irritation or inflammation

  • Excessive eye discharge or watery eyes

  • Recent occurrences of flashes or floaters

  • Eye pain

  • Ingrown eyelashes

  • Sudden and recent vision loss

  • Foreign objects in the eye

  • You can schedule an appointment with an optometrist through the Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS).

Who Can Benefit From This Service?

MECS is open to individuals of all age groups. Children under 16 years of age must have an adult accompany them to their appointment. You do not require a referral from a general practitioner (GP) to access this service.

How Can I Arrange an Appointment with the Service?

You can book a MECS appointment by contacting the practice directly, avoid visiting the practice without making an appointment first.

During your call, you'll be asked about your symptoms to help the team assess the urgency of your situation. Depending on your symptoms, you'll be seen within 24 hours or a few working days.
